The Chaturmas period is especially useful for worship and prayer.
What is it-
Chaturmas is a period of 4 months, which starts from Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi and continues till Kartik Shukla Ekadashi.
- From Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu resides for four months at the place of King Bali of Patala.
There are 4 months of Chaturmas- Shravan, Bhadrapad, Ashwin and Kartik.
The beginning of Chaturmas is called 'Devshayani Ekadashi' and the end is called 'Devutthaan Ekadashi'.
Yognidra in Vishnu's eyes for four months-
Brahmavaivart Purana -
Yognidra pleased Lord Vishnu and prayed that you give me a place in your body parts. Lord Vishnu gave place to Yognidra in his eyes and told her that you will stay in my eyes for four months in a year.
· Most of the festivals of Hindu religion come in four months/4 months.
These four months have special importance in Buddhist and Jain religion.
Vishnu/Hari sleeps on Ekadashi and Shiva/Har sleeps in Poornima Pradosh Kaal -
Uma's husband Shiva sleeps on tiger skin, tied with snake hair.
The Chaturmas period is especially useful for worship and prayer.

· Method of worshipping Vishnu ji and then sleeping after decorating him -
Touching the idol of Vishnu ji is prohibited for four months.
After decorating Shri Hari with yellow clothes and performing Aarti, offer fruits, fragrance, betel nut and then praise him with this mantra.
'Supate tvayi Jagannath Jagat Suptam Bhaved Idam.
Vibudhe tvayi budhyet Jagat Sarvam Chara Charam.'
'O Lord Jagannath! When you sleep, this whole world goes to sleep and when you wake up, the whole world and all living and non-living things wake up.'
After praying, the Lord should be made to sleep on a bed of white clothes.
Health-
The digestive power weakens in 4 months.
What to do-Rule-
- For 4 months, get up before sunrise, take bath.
Remain silent most of the time.
Prohibited work:
4 months - All auspicious workslike marriage,
Yajnopaveet Sanskar, Dikshagrahan, Yajna, Cow donation, Grihapravesh etc. are prohibited when Lord Narayana is sleeping.
Remover of body and mind defects-
Reservoir water is a pilgrimage water- Lord Vishnu sleeps on Shesh Shaiya.
All water bodies have the effect of pilgrimage for 4 months.
-Health enhancing or disease destroying bath
Bathing in small rivers is prohibited from 1st July to Kartik.
(Bathing in other rivers except big rivers like Ganga, Narmada, Sutlej, Yamuna etc.)
For the people living on the banks of the river, bahing in small rivers is also not prohibited.
Bathing in the morning is a pilgrimage bath.
Water purification and defect removal method
- One should bathe twice.
- Bathing with Amla-Mishri water provides great virtue.
- Take bath by adding Belpatra, ground sesame, Amla-Mishri and barley in a bucket of water.

Put sesame, Belpatra, Amla powder in water, bathing with such water removes the defects of water.
Increase energy, energy and intelligence-
1- Keep fast for four months or in Chaturmas, fast on Ekadashi of both the fortnights in these 4 months.
2- Recite Purusha Sukta for intelligence development.
3- Meditate on Om in the middle of the eyebrows to increase intelligence.
- Those who do charity, kindness and control the senses attain the best worlds.
2- Food prohibited during fasting-
Do not consume oil, brinjal, leafy vegetables, milk, sugar, curd, salty or spicy food, sweets, betel nut, meat and alcohol.
-3- 4 months forbidden food items –
Travel items – forbidden in food for four months.
Forbidden – Lemon, radish, pumpkin, sugarcane, salt, tamarind, plum, sawa, lentils, urad, turnip, poi, knotted cabbage, kundru, peas, gram, watermelon, melon, bael fruit, fig, roasted and burnt food, bathua, Nepali coriander.
Shravan month – Vegetables, greens, leafy food items.
Bhadra month – curd.
Ashwani or Kwar month – milk. Bitter gourd.
Kartik month – pulses.
Vegetables with many seeds like bhata, brinjal, parwal, bitter gourd, pumpkin, ladyfinger.
Barbati, meat food.
Ashadh-(use blackberries)
Do not use-
Water kept in a copper vessel, millet, ridge gourd, brinjal, carrot, radish, cauliflower, cabbage, vine, saffron and hapus mango, nutmeg, mace, tamarind, flaxseed, peanuts, refined oil, vegetable ghee, butter, cheese, curd.
Shravan month (eat dry vegetables, drink water in brass or copper vessels)
Do not use
Lentils, gram, brinjal, ridge gourd, arbi, jimikand, kundru, cucumber, new potato, sweet potato, carrot, radish, beetroot, cauliflower, cabbage, ladyfinger, spinach, watermelon, muskmelon, ginger, green chilli, green coriander, tamarind, milk, paneer, cheese, mawa, onion
- papaya, cloves, groundnut oil, chenna, bottle gourd, bitter gourd. Bhadrapad month
Do not use-

Do not use- buttermilk, water from copper vessel, millet, urad, kundru, kundru, bitter gourd, jimikand, soup tomato, potato, arbi cucumber, brinjal, sweet potato, carrot, radish, beetroot, cauliflower, spinach, cabbage, watermelon, melon, papaya, green chilli, red chilli, green coriander, high gravy fenugreek, celery, ginger, cottonseed, mace, tamarind, sesame oil, mustard oil, linseed oil, peanuts, refined oil, curd, shrikhand, lassi, buttermilk, cheese, honey, cashew, pistachio
Kartik month
Do not use
Dry fruits, wheat, urad, kulthi, onion, garlic, straw, brinjal , sweet potato, carrot, radish, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, watermelon, melon, beetroot, kundru, bitter gourd, jimikand, tomato, potato, arbi, beetroot, papaya, red chilli, green chilli, lion fenugreek, celery, suet, nutmeg, mace, refined oil, sesame oil, mustard oil, linseed oil, curd, buttermilk, lassi, honey, dhokla, idli, fermented things, cashews, pistachios, water from copper vessel.
Giving up favourite fod destroys attachment and gives happiness
-Giving up favourite food means take a resolution of not eating it for four months.
-This includes potato, pizza, poha, biscuits, chowmein, milk, tea, coffee
Giving up any thing which is most essential in daily life.
Rejected items Object Metal Colour
- Salt, Brinjal, Aluminium, Glass, China Clay, Copper Utensils, Blue, Black Coloured Clothes, It is important to renounce these items. Purtakarma (charity and religious works) fulfill wishes.
- Rock and black salt have very little fault.
- Use of Palash or Banana leaves is good.
- Best one time meal (Dwadasha Yajna’ fruit).
- Use of one grain food for healthy body-
- Use any one grain (pulses, rice, maize, sorghum, millet, wheat etc.) for four months and not the other. Drink, fruit, vegetable, water chestnut or its flour can be used.
- Sin-destroying virtue rise remedy
Use milk and its products and fruits only for four months.
What is the result of abandoning which item-
1 Sweet voice from abandoning jaggery.
2 Direct beauty of oil body.
3. Enemy gets destroyed by giving up mustard oil.
4. Beauty and consciousness by giving up betel.
5. Body glow by giving up ghee.
6. Cleanliness by giving up vegetable leaves.
7. Superiority like sages by sleeping on the ground.
8. Brahmaloka by skipping a day's meal (not rice).
9. The result of bathing in Ganga is obtained by not cutting nails and hair.
10. By observing silence, his words do not go empty and his orders and instructions are followed.
11. By eating on the ground, one gets land related happiness and ownership of land.
12. By reading Narayan Strot, Shri Sukta, Purush Sukta, one gets Vishnuloka.
13. By eating without asking, one gets the happiness of a religious son.
14. By eating very little food, one gets heavenly happiness.
15. By eating on a leaf, one gets the result of Kurukshetra. 16 Donating jaggery in a copper vessel or donating salt increases fame and prestige.
17 Worshipping the parts of Shiva leads to attaining Rudra Loka and the scholar attains scholarship.
Forbidden in worship - Flowers and leaves
Forbidden in worship during the period from Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi to Kartik Shukla Ekadashi - Durva, Shami, Apamarg, Bhringraj.
----Leafy vegetables such as spinach, greens etc. are prohibited in Shravan.
-Curd is prohibited in Bhadrapad.
Milk is prohibited in Ashwin.
Onion, garlic and urad dal etc. are prohibited in Kartik.
Food vessel/utensil metal/leaves-
1-Palash leaves - 'Skanda Purana' - Food eaten in Palash (Dhak) leaves or in plates made from them during Chaturmas is as virtuous as Chandrayan fast and Ekadashi fast.
-Eating on Palash leaves is as virtuous and sin-destroying as fasting for three nights.
2- Banyan/Vat/Banyan (leaves) leaf plate - Eating on leaf plate is virtuous.
3- Eating on banana leaves enhances appetite, removes food poisoning or gas problem.
5-Bile suppression and blood purification - Bronze vessels - enhances intelligence.
6- Chanting Om Namah Shivay 5 times and then pouring water on the head reduces bile disease, dryness of throat, irritable nature.
7- Eating on Palash leaves is sin-destroying and virtuous, it helps in attaining Brahmabhaav.
Health? Bronze vessels are useful for people suffering from acidity, hematemesis, skin disease, liver and heart disease.
Useful deeds
-Vrat of silence is most important.
Knowledge, morale, extrasensory power, spiritual consciousness increases.
Sleeping on the ground, celibacy, fasting, chanting, meditation, charity etc. are especially beneficial.
Donation items for the salvation of ancestors -
Cow, land, education or education (items related to education such as books, pens, pencils, fees, free tuition).

Sankalpa dvārā prakaṭa hue jisa virāṭa purusha kā, jnyānījana vividha prakāra se varṇana karate haian, ve usakī kitane prakāra se kalpanā karate haian ? Usakā mukha kyā hai ? Bhujā, jāghean aura pānva kauna-se haian ? Sharīra-sanrachanā mean vaha purusha kisa prakāra pūrṇa banā ? ||10||

Jaba devoan ne virāṭa purusha rūpa ko havi mānakara yagna kā shubhārambha kiyā, taba ghṛuta vasanta hrutu, eeandhana(samidhā) grīṣhma hrutu evan havi sharada hrutu huee ||14||
Saptāsyāsan paridhayastri: sapta: samidha: kṛutā:| Devā yadyagnan tanvānāSabadhnan puruṣhan pashum ||15||
Devoan ne jisa yagna kā vistāra kiyā, usamean virāṭa purusha ko hī pashu (havya) rūpa kī bhāvanā se bāndhā (niyukta kiyā), usamean yagna kī sāta paridhiyān (sāta samudra) evan ikkīsa (chhanda) samidhāen hueean ||15||
Yajnyena yagnamayajanta devāstāni dharmāṇi prathamānyāsan | Te ha nākan mahimāna: sachanta yatra pūrve sādhyā: santi devā: ||16|| Aadishreṣhṭha dharmaparāyaṇa devoan ne, yagna se yagnarūpa virāṭa sattā kā yajana kiyā | yajnyīya jīvana jīnevāle dhārmika mahātmājana pūrvakāla ke sādhya devatāoan ke nivāsa, svargaloka ko prāpta karate haian ||16||

Tīna bāra aachamana karean-
Shrī mahālakṣhmyai namah aian aatmā tatvan shodhayāmi namah swāhā। artha- shrī mahālakṣhmī ko merā namana ।
maian aatmā tatva ko shuddha karatā hūan।
Shrī mahālakṣhmyai namah hrīan vidyā tatvan shodhayāmi namah swāhā |
Shrī mahālakṣhmyai namah klīan ṣhiva tatvan shodhayāmi namah swāhā | Artha-shrī mahālakṣhmī ko merā namana। maian shiva tatva ko shuddha karatā hūan।
Sankalpa-
Dāean hātha mean chāvala,jala lekara sankalpa karean- he māan lakṣhmī, maian samasta kāmanāoan kī pūrti ke lie shrīsūkta lakṣhmī jī kī jo sādhanā kara rahā hūan, aapakī kṛupā ke binā kahāan sanbhava hai। he mātā shrī lakṣhmī, muza para prasanna hokara sādhanā ke safala hone kā aashīrvāda dean। (hātha ke chāvala bhūmi para chaढ़ā dean।)
viniyoga –
(dāean hātha mean jala lean।)
Mantra: ¬
hiraṇyavarṇāmiti panshadasharchasya sūktasya, shrī aananda, kardama chiklīta, indirā sutā mahā hrushayah। shrīragnidevatā । aadyastistonuṣhṭubhah chaturthī vṛuhatī। panchamī shaṣhṭhyo triṣhṭubho, tato aṣhṭāvanuṣhṭubhah antyāah prastārapanktiah। hiraṇyavarṇamiti bījan, tām aavaha jātaveda iti shaktiah, kīrti hruddhi dadātu mean iti kīlakam।
shrī mahālakṣhmī prasāda siddhayarthe jape viniyogah। (jala bhūmi para chhoड़ dean।)
artha- isa pandraha hruchāoan vāle shrī sūkta ke kardama aura chiklīta hruṣhi haian arthāt prathama tantra kī iandirā hruṣhi hai, aananda kardama aura chiklīta iandirā panja hai aura shesha chaidaha mantroan ke draṣhṭā haian। prathama tīna hruchāoan kā anuṣhṭupa, chaturtha hruchā kā vahatī, panchama va shaṣhṭha hruchā kā triṣhṭupa evan sātavīan se chaidahavīan hruchā kā anuṣhṭup chhanda hai। pandraha va solahavīan hruchā kā prasāra bhakti chhanda hai। shrī aura agni devatā haian।
’hiraṇyavarṇā’ prathama hruchā bīja aura ’kāan sosmitāan’ chaturtha hruchā shakti hai।
dharma, artha, kāma aura mokṣha prāpti ke lie viniyoga hai। (hātha joड़ kara lakṣhmī jī evan viṣhṇu jī kā dhyāna karean।)
gulābī kamala dala para baiṭhī huee, parāga rāshi ke samāna pītavarṇā, hāthoan mean kamala puṣhpa dhāraṇa kie hue, maṇiyoan yukta alankāroan ko dhāraṇa kie hue, samasta lokoan kī jananī shrī mahālakṣhmī kī hama vandanā karate haian।
shrī sūkta kā pāṭha ¬
Hiraṇyavarṇāan hariṇīan suvaṇr rajatasrajām। chandrāan hiraṇyamayīan lakṣhmīan jātavedo ma aa vaha।।
Artha- jo svarṇa sī kāantimayī hai, jo mana kī daridratā haratī hai, jo svarṇa rajata kī mālāoan se sushobhita hai, chandramā ke sadṛusha prakāshamāna tathā prasanna karane yuktā hai, he jātavedā agnideva aisī devī lakṣhmī ko mere ghara bulāean।
Tāan ma aa vaha jātavedo lakṣhmī manapagāminīm। yasyāan hiraṇyan vindeyan gāmaṣhvan puruṣhānaham।।
artha-
he jātavedā agnideva। aapa una jagat prasiddha lakṣhmī jī ko mere lie bulāean jinakā aavāhana karane para maian svarṇa, gau, ashva aura bhāee, bāandhava, putra, pautra aadi ko prāpta karūan।
mahattva- gau, ashva aadi kī prāpti hotī hai। Ashvapūrvāan rathamadhyāan hastināda pramodinīm। shriyan devīmupa hvaye shrīrmā devī jushatām।।
artha-jisa devī ke aage ghoड़e aura madhya mean ratha hai athavā jisake sammukha ghoड़e ratha mean jute hue haian, aise ratha mean baiṭhī huee hāthiyoan ke nināda se vishva ko prafullita karane yuktā dedīpyamāna evan samasta janoan ko aashraya dene yuktā lakṣhmī ko maian apane sammakh aamantrita karatā hūn |lakṣhmī mare ghara mean sarvadā nivāsa karean। Kāan sosmitāan hiraṇyaprākārāmādrrāan jvalantīan tṛuptāan tarpayantīm। padmesthitāan padmavarṇāan tāmihopa hvaye shriyam।।
Artha-
aapakā adbhuta avarṇaniyā haian | mukhāravianda manda-manda muskātā hai, aapakā svarūpa avarṇanīya hai, aapa chāroan ora se svarṇa se manḍita aura dayā se aardra ,hṛudayā athavā samudra se utpanna aardra sharīra se yukta dedīpyamāna haian। manorathoan ko pūrṇa karane yuktā, kamala ke oopara virājita, kamala sadṛusha gṛuha mean nivāsita|| Prasiddha lakṣhmī ko maian apane pāsa aamantrita karatā hūn । Chandrāan prabhāsāan yashasāan jvalantīan shriyan loke devajuṣhṭāmudārām। tāan padminīmīan sharaṇan prapadyealakṣhmīrmean naṣhyatāan tvāan vṛuṇe।।
Artha-
chandramā ke samāna prabhā yuktā, apanī kīrti se dedīpyamāna, svargaloka mean iandrādi devoan se pūjita ,udāra kamala ke madhya rahane yuktā, aashrayadātrī sharaṇa mean aatā hūan। aapakī kṛupā se daridratā naṣhṭa ho। Aadityavarṇe tapasodhi jāto vanaspatistava vṛukṣho’thabilvah। tasya falāni tapasā nudantu yā antarā yāṣhcha bāhyā alakṣhmīah।।
Artha-
he ravi ke samāna kāanti yuktā, aapake teja se ye vana pādapa prakaṭa haian। aapake teja se yaha binā puṣhpa ke fala dene vālā bilva vṛukṣha utpanna huaa। usī prakāra aapa apane teja se bāhṛuya aura aabhyantara kī daridratā ko naṣhṭa karean। Upaitu māan devasakhah kīrtiṣhcha maṇinā saha। prādurbhūtosmi rāṣhṭre’smin kīrtimṛuddhi dadātu me।।
artha-he lakṣhmī। shrī mahādeva ke sakhā maṇibhadra (kubera ke mitra) ke sātha kīrti arthāt yasha muze prāpta ho | Maian isa vishva mean utpanna huaa hūan muze kīrti- samṛuddhi pradāna kara kirtuvāna yashasvī karean। Kṣhutpipāsāmalāan jyeṣhṭhāma lakṣhmīan nāshayāmyaham। abhūtima samṛuddhian cha sarvāan nirṇuda me gṛuhāt।।
Artha- bhūkha aura pyāsa kī dhātrī jyeṣhṭha bhaginī alakṣhmī ko mai naṣhṭa karatā hūan। he lakṣhmī। aapa mere ghara se anaishvarya, vaibhavahīnatā tathā dhana vṛuddhi ke ke vighnoan ko dūra karean। Gandhadvārāan durādharṣhāan nitya puṣhṭāan karīṣhiṇīm eeṣhvarīan sarvabhūtānāan tāmihopa hvaye shriyam।।
Artha-
sugandhita puṣhpa ke samarpaṇa se prāpta dhana dhānya se sarvadā pūrṇa kara samṛuddhi dene, yuktā, samasta prāṇiyoan kī swāminī tathā vishva prasiddha lakṣhmī ko maian apane ghara mean sādara bulātā hūan। Manasah kāmamākūtian vāchah satyamaṣhīmahi। paṣhūnāan rūpamannasya mayi shrīah shrayatāan yashah।।
Artha-
he māan lakṣhmī। aapake divya prabhāva se maian mānasika ichchhā evan sankalpa, vāṇī kī satyatā, gau aadi pashuoan se prāpta, dugdha-dadhyādi evan sabhī annoan prāpta karūan । maian lakṣhmīvān aura kīrtivāna banūan Kardamena prajā bhūtā mayi sanbhava kardama। shriyan vāsaya me kule mātaran padmamālinīm।।
Artha-
’kardama’ nāmaka hruṣhi putra se lakṣhmī prakaṭa huee haian। he kardama, tuma muzamean nivāsa karo tathā kamala kī mālā yuktā lakṣhmī ko mere kula mean nivāsa karāo। Aapah sṛujantu snigdhāni chiklīta vasa me gṛuhe। ni cha devīan mātaran shriyan vāsaya me kule।।
Artha- jala devatā varuṇa snigdha padārthoan ko utpanna karean। lakṣhmī ke aananda, kardama, chiklīta aura shrīta ye chāra putra haian। he chiklīta nāmaka lakṣhmī putra, tuma mere gṛuha mean nivāsa karo। divya guṇayuktā apanī mā lakṣhmī ko mere ghara mean nivāsa karāo। aadrrāan puṣhkariṇīan puṣhṭian piḍgalāan padmamālinīm। chandrāan hiraṇyamayīan lakṣhmīan jātavedo ma aa vaha।।
Artha-
he agnideva। tuma mere ghara mean diggajoan (hāthiyoan) ke shuṇḍāgra se aardra sharīra yuktā, puṣhṭipradā, pīta varṇa yuktā, kamala kī mālā yuktā, jagata ko prakāshita karane vālī prakāsha svarūpā lakṣhmī ko bulāo। aadrrāan yah kariṇīan yaṣhṭian suvarṇāan hemamālinīm। sūryāan hiraṇyamayīan lakṣhmīan jātavedo ma aa vaha।।
artha-
he agnideva। tuma mere ghara mean sadā daryārdra mana se athavā samasta bhuvana jisakī yāchanā karate haian, duṣhṭoan ko danḍa dene athavā yaṣhṭivat avalanbanīyā (jisa prakāra asamartha purusha ko lakaड़ī kā sahārā chāhie usī prakāra lakṣhmī jī ke sahāre se ashakta vyakti bhī sanpanna ho jātā hai), suandara varṇa yuktā evan svarṇa kī mālā yuktā sūryarūpā, aisī prakāsha svarūpā lakṣhmī ko bulāo। Tāan ma aa vaha jātavedo lakṣhmī mana pagāminīm, yasyāan hiraṇyan prabhūtan gāvo dāsyo’shvān bindeyan puṣhānaham।।। Artha-
he agnideva। mere yahāan una lakṣhmī ko, jo muze chhoड़kara anyatra kabhī na jāen , bulāo। lakṣhmī ke dvārā maian svarṇa, uttama aishvarya, gau, ghoड़e aura putra pautrādi ko prāpta karūan। Ya: shuchī parayutā bhūta juhuyādājyamanvaham। sūktan panchadasharchan cha shrī kāmah satatan japet।।
Artha-
manuṣhya lakṣhmī kī kāmanā se pavitra aura sāvadhāna hokara agni mean goghṛuta kā havana aura sātha hī shrī sūkta kī pandraha hruchāoan kā pratidina pāṭha kare।
